The Work. The Life. The Balance. w/ Actress, Shawday Mambo

What do you do for work?
I’m an actress. My job as an actress is to be a storyteller, where I help children and adults use their imagination to go on an adventure with me as if they’re a part of the story. I’m currently on a national tour for Paw Patrol.

How did you get this job?
I sent in a video submission to a casting, showing my singing, dancing and acting abilities. In the acting industry, if the casting team wants to see where you fit in their show, you’ll receive a “Callback”. I found out a week later that I got the lead role in the national tour of Paw Patrol.

What are a few other roles you’ve played that we’ve likely heard of?
Belle (Beauty & the Beast), Tiana (The Princess and the Frog), and Lion King vocalist for Disney’s Cruise Line.

What is one of the biggest challenges you have faced at work as someone whose goal is to live by the Bible?
Staying focused on my purpose. It’s easy to get caught up in the profession at times. It can be easy to lose sight of my true identity and remember what I do as an occupation is not who I am.

How would you advise someone to best manage this challenge i.e. your (biblical) best practice?
I would advise to do a quiet time on what Jesus took them out of and what he’s creating in them. It [this quiet time] would help to remember their true identity in Christ. I would advise them to go after seeking the Kingdom first [Matthew 6:33], making a plan of how to seek the Kingdom while being on tour [or their equivalent schedule-intensive job]. Always set a time for their Quiet Times, times to share their faith and build relationships with others in the profession. Have an anchor scripture (a-go to scripture) to hold onto in their heart and recite it in prayer. Have creative ways to stay in fellowship (connected) with others everyday. Voice message a spiritual mentor their life updates seeking advice where needed so their mentor can have an idea of how to help them.

What’s a scripture that would be a great anchor when trying to manage this work challenge?
“Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.” John 15:4

What are you reading in your quiet times lately?
I’m doing a Bible Study Reading Plan. I just finished reading the book of Daniel and now I’m onto reading the book of Ezra. From my time reading the book of Daniel. I learned that even he was a man of high prominence and held many titles as a government official. He held his closeness with God to high esteem. That came first before anything. He never compromised his walk with God. He even went to God three times out of the day [in prayer] to maintain a closeness with God. His devotion to God was seen by many–it even led him to the Lion Den. But others were able to see God’s hands were on him in the end.

It teaches me no matter how far I go as an actress, I am first and foremost a daughter of a King. And my purpose is to be an example in the world and help others have a relationship with God and always stay devoted to God too.

How do you prepare for your workday i.e. your morning routine?

  • I wake up at 5:00am
  • Stretch for 5 mins
  • Have either water or ginger tea and a small breakfast
  • 5 mins meditation or listen to spiritual music to clear my head
  • 30 mins of prayer in a journal
  • 1 hour reading my Bible
  • Head to rehearsal
  • Then do a show in the morning and afternoon
